Greetings!

I just want to say it’s all going to be okay. It really is. I hear so much about people feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, disappointed, angry, and afraid of what will come next. I totally understand. I’ve been there too. Sometimes when we hear the latest news, or tune into politics, it can feel like the world is going crazy. For those of us who are highly empathic, that can sometimes feel devastating. We sense the turmoil around us, and even the geopathic stress in our planet, as if it is our own – and in a way it is our own, because we are all connected.

We definitely live in interesting times, which some would say is a curse, but it is also a great opportunity. The chaos in our world is an invitation to explore our own inner chaos, and to choose the future we want to create. Making choices brings order to chaos. Our choice is love or fear. That has always been our choice, but now we are pushed to choose in more dramatic ways.

Almost every day now, we hear media reports of terrorism, mass murder, racial inequality, political unrest, climate change, and on and on. It is all orchestrated to stir up fear, anger, and chaos, but we have a choice about how we respond to it. Will we allow it to pull us into the chaotic tangle of ego struggles and negative emotions, or will we choose to find the eye of the hurricane, the calm center in the storm?

It seems to me that the most important thing we can do in these dramatic times is to find a way to connect with that center of calm that lives within each of us. Some find it through meditation, which has been the classic way, but there are probably as many ways as there are people. What do you love? What shifts you into right brain dominance? That is the key. In those moments when you lose track of time and the woes of the world feel far away, you are in your place of power. For me it can be painting, singing, spending time in nature, dancing, laughing with friends, different things at different times. The point is to notice what gets you there and go there often until it becomes a habit and anything less just doesn’t feel worth pursuing.

Then you can be a positive force of peace and calm in the world, rather than adding another chaotic energy to the mix. That may not seem very helpful, but it is. Why would there be such an effort to stir up chaos if peace and calm were not a threat to the status quo? Just something to think about.

A little peek into my newsletter process: Putting an online newsletter together today is a lot different than it was when I started out 10 years ago. (Hard to believe it will really be 10 years next month!) Back then it was pretty simple. I wrote articles, added a few photos and pasted links. I liked it that way, but as they say, “change is inevitable.”

Now informative boxes, like you see below, pop up when I paste in a link, whether I want them or not. My auto-responder program has created “helpful” templates that make it a nightmare to copy this blog to email format… or at least I haven’t figured out how to do very well it without a lot of hassle and wasted time. Hence, the email version often doesn’t look as nice as the blog page. It is often missing the photos and even some of the links.

So I apologize for my lack of technical expertise and the missing links and photos in the email version. Though I don’t like making people click through to the blog (I’m not interested in collecting traffic statistics), clicking through really is the best way to view my newsletter.

I will continue doing the best I can to connect you with the latest and greatest body, mind, and spirit wellness news I can find. And I’m always open to suggestions from my readers. Let me know what you want to read about.

Read on for the latest on Ashwagandha, DIY sunscreen, clearing heavy metals, best protein sources, and Bach Flowers for dogs.

To your health and happiness!

Pharma drugs in our waterThe Healing Power of Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is one of the most versatile herbs available. As an adaptogenic herb, it works to balance all the systems of the body and has an impressive list of positive effects.

From thetruthaboutcancer.com:

More than 200 studies reinforce the many known health benefits of ashwagandha. These include:

  • Increased stamina and endurance
  • Improved thyroid and adrenal gland function
  • Reduced stress and fatigue
  • Protection against gastric ulcers
  • Enhanced memory and cognition
  • Protection against neurological disease and neurodegeneration
  • Increased mitochondrial function and energy levels
  • Anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects
  • Anti-tumor and anti-cancer effects
  • Improved immunity
  • Boosted athletic performance
  • Better sleep and decreased anxiety
  • Central nervous system support

As you can see, the uniquely adaptogenic nature of ashwagandha makes it a potent remedy for nearly every facet of health that needs correcting or balancing.

Ashwagandha has been safely used by people of all ages for many centuries, but it is best to take breaks in usage every week or two. As wonderful as ashwagandha seems to be, some people do experience side effects. People with thyroid issues, diabetes, liver diseases, digestive disorders and ulcers should usually avoid ashwagandha unless supervised by a health professional experienced with herbs. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also avoid Ashwagandha for it has been suspected to cause miscarriages.

DIY sunscreen

Make Your Own Sunscreen!

I may never get around to trying this, because I don’t use sunscreen very often, but this recipe could come in handy for those who love messing around with DIY body care products, or for anyone who wants to save a little money. From sevennutrition.com:

2 tbs shea butter
3 tbs coconut oil
1 tsp aloe vera gel
2 tbsp zinc oxide (non nano)

Put on low heat and will quickly liquify. Stir. Put in container and enjoy.

heavy metal detox protocolAre Heavy Metals Weighing You Down?

I’f you’ve been reading my newsletter for awhile, you already know about Anthony William, the Medical Medium and his heavy metal detox recommendations. Here’s a great article he wrote about how to clear heavy metals out of your body. I’ve been following his protocol for a few months now, and it feels great. I don’t always eat the 5 detox ingredients every day. It takes a little planning to always have fresh cilantro in the house, but I probably eat them all 5 days a week on average. I feel like I am gradually clearing these toxins out of my system and that feels wonderful. I wish I had known about this years ago!

From goop.com:

In the modern world, the accumulation of heavy metals and other toxins, along with inherited mercury deposits, is inevitable—that’s the bad news. The good news is that it is relatively easy to get rid of the heavy metals that you may have already accumulated (both generational and recent), though it may take quite awhile. There are steps you can take to minimize your future exposure. Adding the following all-star team of foods to your diet and being diligent in your efforts to consume them will go a long way toward ridding your body of heavy metals:

  • Spirulina (preferably from Hawaii): This edible blue-green algae draws out heavy metals from your brain, central nervous system, and liver, and soaks up heavy metals extracted by barley grass juice extract powder. Take 2 teaspoons mixed in water, coconut water, or juice.
  • Barley grass juice extract powder: This nutritive grass has the ability to draw heavy metals out of your spleen, intestinal tract, pancreas, thyroid, and reproductive system. Barley grass juice extract prepares the mercury for complete absorption by the spirulina. Drink 1-2 teaspoons mixed into coconut water or juice.
  • Cilantro: Goes deep into hard-to-reach places, extracting metals from yesteryear (so it’s great for that mercury inheritance you’re carrying around!). Blend one cup in a smoothie or juice, or add to salad or guacamole.
  • Wild blueberries (only from Maine): Draw heavy metals out of your brain tissue, healing and repairing any gaps created by oxidation when the heavy metals are removed. It is important to use wild blueberries, as they possess unique phytonutrients with special detoxifying capabilities. The potent antioxidants in wild blueberries help reverse any oxidative damage left behind by the heavy metal removal. This is especially important for your brain tissue—in fact, wild blueberries are the most powerful food for halting or in some cases reversing Alzheimer’s and dementia. Eat at least one cup daily. Note: while cultivated blueberries are nutritious, they lack the metal-drawing ability of the wild blueberries.
  • Atlantic dulse: In addition to mercury, this edible seaweed binds to lead, aluminum, copper, cadmium, and nickel. Unlike other seaweeds, Atlantic dulse is a powerful force for removing mercury on its own. Atlantic dulse goes into deep, hidden places of the digestive tract and gut, seeking out mercury, binding to it, and never releasing it until it leaves the body. Eat two tablespoons of flakes daily, or an equal amount of strips if it’s in whole-leaf form. Note: As it comes from the ocean, if you are concerned about the dulse itself having mercury, be aware that Atlantic sea dulse will not release any mercury it might possess into the body. It holds on to the mercury as it works its way through, and even grabs onto other metals along the way and drives them out as well. Atlantic dulse is a critical part of the team because it can hang out near the finish line (i.e., our colon), waiting for the other foods that have been grabbing on to heavy metals along the way. It serves as emergency backup, helping ensure that all the heavy metals that made it as far as the colon actually leave the body.

Fresh organic salad every dayBest Protein Sources

When I became vegetarian over 40 years ago, the question everyone asked was, “How do you get your protein?” Frankly, I never worried about it. It seemed like nuts and beans and a combination of fruits and vegetables would provide everything I needed, and they did, with the possible exception of vitamin B12.

I have to admit that my radical experiments with diet were not the best for my health, but lack of protein was never a problem. The point is that it’s a lot better to make big dietary changes gradually, and that you can easily fill you protein needs with plant foods like: Quinoa, Lentils, Black Beans, Chickpeas (Garbanzo beans), Chia, Hemp Seeds, Almonds, Pumpkin Seeds, Sesame, Sunflower and Poppy Seeds, Brown Rice, Leafy Greens, Spirulina

Bach Flower Remedies for Dogs – and You!

I’ve used Bach Flower Remedies for decades and the most dramatic effects have been noticeable when I used them on my pets. Children also respond very quickly, but adults often take longer. Adults are more set in our ways and it takes time to shift our emotional balance.

You have probably heard of Rescue Remedy, easily the most popular of the remedies, but there are 38 remedies that cover every possible emotional malady. The one I find to be most indispensable is Mimulus which is for known fears. Any dog that has experienced abuse or trauma will naturally be afraid of whatever caused it. I have seen Mimulus turn that fear around in a matter of minutes.

From dogsnaturallymagazine.com:

There’s one popular blend you may know. You may even have used it on your dog during a trip to the vet, in a thunderstorm or when the fireworks are booming all around you on the 4thof July. This blend is known as Rescue Remedy. It contains 5 single essences and can help with all kinds of stressful situations for your dog.

  • Impatiens – a remedy to help with impatience, irritability, agitation
  • Clematis – for spaciness or faintness, detachment
  • Rock Rose – for terror, panic, hysteria
  • Cherry Plum – for loss of self control
  • Star of Bethlehem – for trauma or grief

Rescue Remedy is a good example of how you can combine different essences to cover a range of states of mind.

One important thing to remember is that you should only use the flower essences to treat your dog’s emotional state. They don’t match specific physical disorders, so your dog may need additional care methods for a physical ailment. But you can safely use them alongside other treatments like homeopathy – and they won’t interfere with homeopathic remedies.
