Happy Birthday Q

Message from Bernadette Wulf

Greetings!

It’s Q’s birthday. My blue and gold macaw is 25 years old today. We’ve had a lot of adventures together since I first met him as a 2-week-old, fuzzy, gray chick with a huge black beak. Happy Birthday Q!

This month we take a look at herbs for calming and meditation, why potato chips are really bad for you, how inflammation causes heart disease, the dangers of triclosan, and why we need Omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA (and the best sources); they relieve inflammation and protect your brain too!

I’m still getting grounded after our Journeys in the Faery Realm workshop last weekend. It went really well and I am so grateful for all the wonderful people who came. I always love hanging out with faery fans, who are invariably heart-centered people who deeply care about Nature.

Wow, I just peeked outside and saw a beautiful, gold and black oriole on my deck, probably trying to figure out how to access the hummingbird feeder. Or maybe he was here to wish Q a happy birthday, LOL.

As always, I would love to hear what you want to read about. Feel free to send requests, suggestions, or any sort of feedback. I appreciate hearing from my readers. Email Bernadette

To your health!

Meditating with herbs3 Herbs for Spiritual Awakening

When we think of herbs, we usually think about their healing properties for the body, or the flavors they add to foods, but there are several herbs that can also help to awaken your mind, calm your nerves, and soothe mental chatter. From wakeupworld.com:

1.  He Shou Wu (Fo-Ti)

…He Shou Wu has been credited with reversing many diseases, DNA protection and repair, and extending lifespan in a number of studies. [Less well known is the fact that] He Shou Wu is a powerful plant for enhancing one’s intuitive perception and abilities.  [ ]Users of He Shou Wu often notice a distinct increase in creativity, inspiration, and intuitive guidance, making it an important herb for artists, meditators, or anyone seeking to expand their experience of reality in profound ways. Recommended dose: ¼ to ½ teaspoon daily and working up from there.

2. Reishi

…Like He Shou Wu, Reishi is also a powerful Shen tonic, meaning it is an herb that nurtures the spirit. However, Reishi’s spiritual properties are a bit different than He Shou Wu’s in practical terms. Reishi works to profoundly relax the nervous system, calm the mind, and induce a state of relaxed focus and flow, for which it has long been valued by spiritual seekers, meditators, and those looking to relieve the stresses of daily life. [ ]Reishi is relaxing without being sedating and could be likened to “meditation in a pill,” although different in its own unique way.

[ ]The Daoists believe that wild growing Reishi in its native habitat (dense, high mountain forests in Northern Asia and China) contains more Shen (spiritual) energy than Reishi grown in a greenhouse on sawdust and wood chips, which is actually a quite common growing medium these days.  As such, it is extremely important to look for sustainably wild harvested Reishi products.

3. Holy Basil (Tulsi)

…With a wide range of impressive health benefits, [Holy Basil] does everything from powerfully reducing stress and calming anxiety to balancing blood sugar, restoring proper functioning of the endocrine system, and more. [ ]Holy Basil has also long been a favorite of meditators in India and throughout the world who use the plant to help calm the chatter of the mind and body, allowing users to enter deeper states of awareness more easily.

Holy Basil can be had as tea or as more concentrated extracts in capsules and tinctures. Either of these is fine to reap its benefits, and daily use is not needed to feel its effects, although more profound shifts in health often accompany prolonged use.

potato chips are toxicBefore You Eat that Potato Chip

Once you start eating potato chips (or crisps if you are from the UK) it is hard to stop, but after you read this article, you may never want to eat them again. Steamed or boiled potatoes are an excellent food, but when deep fried, or even baked at high temperatures, they develop toxic compounds. Here are a few of the toxins found in potato chips, from thetruthaboutcancer.com:

#1. Acrylamides

This dangerous chemical is created when starchy vegetables, especially potatoes, are baked, fried, toasted, or roasted at temperatures of 212 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. As the carbs are cooked, the sugar combines with asparagine, an amino acid, and forms acrylamide. One telltale sign that acrylamides are present is their signature yellow brown color that forms on foods cooked at these temperatures. This chemical has been proven to increase cancer risk, and affect the nervous system as well.

#2. PAH: Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

These carcinogenic compounds are formed when smoke from the grill, oven, or stove gets into the air while cooking at high temperatures. These carcinogens then penetrate the food and you consume them [and breathe them]. If you are smoking meats, vegetables, or even cheese on the grill or in a smoker, your vegetables will be impregnated with these cancerous carbons.

#3. HCA: Heterocyclic Amines

These detrimental gems are formed from over-cooking food at high temperatures, thus charring the food. Any overcooked chips potentially contain HCAs even though they are more commonly found on meats. Studies have shown that consuming charred food increases your risk of developing cancer.

#4. AGE: Advanced Glycation End Products

Glycation occurs when food is cooked at high temperatures, which is done to sterilize it from pathogens. Sugar combines with protein to produce these end-products that accumulate in the tissues. The result of high concentrations of AGEs in tissues is low level chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and kidney failure.

Unfortunately, baked potato chips may be even worse than fried:

[ ]Oil fries the chips faster in the big vats so they are processed for a shorter time period. But, the oven takes longer so their exposure is increased, causing more acrylamides to form simultaneously. Therefore, baking is not exactly better. However, if you bake at a very low temperature, say 115 degrees Fahrenheit, then the likelihood of acrylamide formation is decreased. As a rule of thumb low temperature cooking is key to safer food.

heart attack symptoms in womenInflammation & Heart Disease

The science is in. It looks like the biggest risk factor for heart disease, and quite a few other diseases, is inflammation. As we age, inflammation often gets worse and worse. The aches and pains of aging may seem to be “normal,” but they are really not normal at all. They are the result of increased inflammation from diet, pollutants, and other toxins that build up in the body, eventually leading to serious disease.

From NutritionFacts.org:

Inflammation may play a role in a number of diseases, including asthma, premature aging, mental health issues, periodontal disease, obesity, skin aging, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, cancer, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Brain inflammation from arachidonic acid found in animal products may explain why those eating plant-based diets have less stress, anxiety and depression, and better moods.

Fortunately, we can reverse inflammation pretty quickly by avoiding the most common inflammatory foods, such as eggs, meat and dairy products, and increasing anti-inflammatory foods like berries, cherries, flax, ginger, broccoli, citrus, mushrooms, leafy greens, beans, nuts:

…specifically English walnuts, which may be so effective that the equivalent of eating a single walnut half per day may cut the risk of dying from inflammatory disease in about half.

Wow! I wonder what eating a whole walnut would do.

Laughter HealsProtect Your Brain Health

Follow the link below to a great short video about how EPA and DHA Omega 3 fatty acids protect your brain. Dr. Greger presents studies showing that taking an algae based EPA and DHA supplement can keep your brain from shrinking as you age, and protect it from deteriorating. In addition, he also recommends eating 2 to 4 tablespoons of ground flax per day to maintain ideal Omega 3 levels. You can bake ground flax into muffins or pancakes, or blend it into smoothies if you don’t like it on its own.

The only other supplement Dr. Greger usually recommends for healthy people is Vitamin B12, 2500 mcg per week (along with a whole-foods plant-based diet). VeganSafe is considered to be the best brand of B12.

From NutritionFacts.org: This is why I recommend 250mg a day of a pollutant-free [algae] source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids.

Glyphosate/RoundUp dangersAvoiding Triclosan

You won’t usually find triclosan listed on the labels of items around your house, but it is quite a pervasive toxin found in just about everything from body care products to countertops, cutting boards, storage containers, garbage bags, blankets, mattresses, and furniture. The only way to avoid it is to find out where it is hiding and remove those products from your life as much as possible.

Triclosan is an antimicrobial chemical that pollutes people and the environment. It is found in most Americans, where it may be interfering with the hormone and reproductive systems and increasing sensitivity to allergens. Triclosan will soon be banned from soaps because of concern that it is neither safe nor effective, yet it may be found in hundreds of other products. EWG’s review of industry documents and government databases on approved uses identified places all around the house where triclosan may be hiding.
