I always feel like I’ve crossed the finish line when June arrives. Finally, we’ve made it to summertime! Contrary to what that sappy Christmas song says, I think summer is “the most wonderful time of the year”—and I won’t be fooled by a song!
As my friend Dailey pointed out, we only have so many summers in a lifetime. Let’s make sure to savor every moment of it.

Are Emulsifiers Killing You?
They seem like harmless food thickeners and they are found in almost every processed food, so they couldn’t be that dangerous… or could they? I’m talking about emulsifiers, even so-called “natural” ones.
This article from NaturalHealth365 shares some startling statistics:
The most compelling evidence comes from the ADDapt trial, a rigorous study of 154 patients with active Crohn’s disease across 19 UK medical centers. Researchers did something unprecedented – they created a controlled experiment where some patients avoided emulsifiers while others unknowingly continued consuming them through specially prepared foods.
The results were dramatic. Nearly half of the patients avoiding emulsifiers (49.4%) saw significant improvement in their Crohn’s symptoms, compared to only 31% of those still consuming these chemicals. That’s a 60% better response rate just from removing these additives from food.
Even more striking, patients avoiding emulsifiers were more than twice as likely to achieve remission from their disease. Their inflammatory markers in stool samples dropped by more than 50%, proving this wasn’t just about feeling better – their bodies were actually healing. [ ]
The cancer connection that should alarm everyone
But Crohn’s disease isn’t the only concern. A massive French study following 92,000 adults for nearly seven years found disturbing links between emulsifiers and cancer risk.
People consuming the highest amounts of mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids (labeled as E471 on ingredient lists) had a 15% higher risk of developing cancer overall. For breast cancer specifically, the risk jumped 24%. Prostate cancer risk increased by a staggering 46%.
Another emulsifier called carrageenan showed similar patterns, with heavy consumers facing 32% higher breast cancer rates. These aren’t small increases – we’re talking about chemicals that could be significantly raising cancer risk for millions of people who consume them daily.
Look for words like carrageenan, polysorbate 80, carboxymethyl cellulose, and maltodextrin.
Here are a few more to avoid: casein, gum Arabic, sorbitan esters and possibly lecithin.
Read your labels folks! Your health and life could depend on it.

Heavy Metals & Your Heart

Heavy metals are everywhere now — in our foods, air, water and soil. You can’t avoid them completely, but you can minimize your exposure.
Avoid: aluminum cans, foil and cookware, cast iron cookware, seafood, meats, conventionally grown produce, and unnecessary “shots,” drugs and medical treatments. Live and work away from busy roads and airports if you have the option.
Choose: California-grown rice, rice cooked in lots of water and drained like pasta, organically grown produce, natural environments.
A safe way to remove all these metals from your body is the Medical Medium Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie, or just include these 5 main ingredients in your diet every day:
- 1-2 cups wild blueberries
- 1 tablespoon Atlantic dulse
- 1 packed cup fresh cilantro
- 1 teaspoon barley grass juice powder

Note: While I have benefitted from the Medical Medium healing protocols in his first book and still recommend the book to anyone dealing with health issues, particularly of viral origin, I am not a fan of his recent “spiritual” podcasts. I feel like there is a lot of negative energy and a bit of paranoia in the few that I listened to. He’s only human and subject to negative influences as much as anyone else. Trust your gut about what you accept into your thought field—remembering that thoughts shape your reality.
Avoiding Fatty Liver Disease
It seems like fatty livers are becoming a new epidemic. In the past, most liver damage was attributed to drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, but now even children are being diagnosed with fatty livers—nearly 70–80% of obese children!
The two main causes appear to be excess sugars and excess fats in the diet.

Given these new data, a liver journal editorial read that “a strong argument can be made that we are beyond any period of uncertainty about the harmful effects of excess sugar consumption and that we must now act on the large body of available data to inform the public of the health risks of eating too much sugar.”
And how do we know excess dietary fat is bad? Because it’s also been put to the test. When people were randomized to a low-fat diet or a high-fat diet with the same number of calories, within just two weeks, the liver fat of those on the low-fat diet decreased by 20 percent, whereas it increased by 35 percent in the participants getting the same number of calories but on a high-fat diet.
On the low-fat diet, insulin levels went down about 15 percent, and on the high-fat diet, insulin levels went up about 15 percent.
Don’t be fooled by the popular Keto and Paleo fads that promote eating excessive amounts of animal fats (RFK’s anti-seed oil campaign included). While they are right about avoiding refined sugar in all it’s forms (i.e. corn syrup, white sugar, brown sugar, dextrose and the rest), avoiding refined and saturated fats is just as important—maybe even more so.

Reishi Alzheimer’s Prevention
Few things are more frightening than the threat of losing your mind, your memories and your ability to recognize your loved ones.
We know that greater fruit and vegetable consumption has been linked with lower rates of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, but what else can we do to tip the scales in our favor?
Aside from adopting a whole plant foods diet, here’s one excellent suggestion: include reishi mushroom in your diet.

What makes reishi truly special is how comprehensive its effects seem to be. The bioactive components in Ganoderma lucidum – primarily polysaccharides and triterpenes – work on multiple fronts:

We need more studies on the subject, but reishi is such a time-tested and easily available supplement, that it is well worth including as a preventive measure right away.
