March coming in like a mountain lionGreetings!

How do you like my fresh new look – on the blog page that is? I’m trying a different WordPress theme and I like it a lot. I hope you do too!

March is certainly coming in like a lion around most of the US and Canada.

Our local Sonoma County lions are cougars. Aren’t they beautiful? I may have spotted one once, far off in the distance, but they are pretty elusive.

We’ve had lots of stormy weather. That’s a good thing, since we really need the rain, but I’ll be happy to welcome in the lamb.

My News

I was invited to present a workshop at the Fairy & Gaian Congress – March 18th. It’s on the Avalon Faeries and the New Earth. You can learn more here – https://fairycongress.com/community-membership/ –  Not sure if you can just sign up, or if you have to become a member first. Anyway, it will be lots of fun!

My next workshop will be on Faery Queen Guinevere and King Arthur. Have you every wondered why their legends are so popular and enduring? It will all become clear!

I’m still debating on whether to schedule it for late March or early April. Check back on my events page if you’re interested.

Fat on the brain? Are You a Fat Head?

I recently heard a prominent shamanic teacher saying that one part of your brain (the older part) lives on sugar and the new developing part needs fat.

What?

He provided absolutely no scientific foundation for his claim, but then neither does Anthony William.

However, Anthony William (the Medical Medium) has a track record of helping millions of people regain their health, so I tend to take his advice more seriously.

Following Medical Medium advice sure made a dramatic difference in healing my Lyme symptoms. My constant neck and shoulder pain (for years) is now completely gone!

Here’s what Anthony William has to say about fat and the brain:

The roughly 60 percent fat inside the brain that medical research and science claim is not all omegas. The fat that accumulates in the brain is the same as the fat that’s in a sick liver, which is also not all omegas. It’s fatty deposits of unproductive fat.

Are there omegas inside a healthy brain? Yes, there are. Do they play a role? Yes, they do. It’s a small role. The role these trace omegas play inside the brain is the same role they play inside all organs in the body: they act as insulation for cold temperatures.

Omegas inside all organs, including in the brain, are there to act as a mild barrier inhibiting the body from going into shock too fast from cold temperatures. And yet glorifying the importance of fats for the brain doesn’t save us. For the brain, fats are a small tool with a relatively small purpose compared to the major significance of sugar’s role in keeping you alive.

And by sugar, he doesn’t mean refined sugar. Whole food carbohydrates like potatoes, sweet potatoes, fruits and gluten free grains are the best sources of the glucose/sugar our brains need to thrive.

Vegetarian Athletes vs. Meat Eaters

Vegetarian athletes win in endurance studiesThis is a fascinating article on studies comparing fitness and endurance between vegetarians and meat eaters.

I knew a meat-free diet was generally healthier, but I had no idea how much it could improve athletic performance.

Here’s just one example from Dr. Greger’s article at nutritionfacts.org:

How many deep knee bends can you do? One meat-eating athlete did more than 1,000, with the group as a whole averaging 383, but the plant-eating athletes creamed them, averaging 927. Even the sedentary vegetarians performed better than the meat-eating athletes; they averaged 535 deep knee bends. That’s wild! “Even the sedentary [meat] abstainers surpassed the exercising flesh-eaters” in performance. In most cases, the sedentary plant-eaters were physicians who sat on their butts all day.

I’d like to see ANY doctor doing 535 deep knee bends, but that’s what the study found. It’s way out of my ballpark, but I guess I’d be in worse shape if I had been eating meat for the past 50 years, LOL.

Top Satiating Foods

Top foods to fill you up and satisfy your appetite - potatoWhen you are hungry you want foods that fill you up and “stick to your ribs” as the saying goes.

Here’s an abbreviated list of the best foods for that purpose, from theartofantiaging.com:

  • Potatoes – Potatoes have been regarded as unhealthy in the past, but they are actually extremely nutritious— and very filling.
  • Oats/Oatmeal – Oats are one of the most filling grains due to their high soluble fiber content. Studies have found that oatmeal, in particular, increases satiety and decreases appetite for hours after eating it.
  • Avocados – They are one of the most nutritious fruits you can eat and one of the most filling foods as well. [Be careful! They are also very high in fat. – Ed.]
  • Chickpeas – Chickpeas are a great example of a high fiber food that’s also rich in plant-based protein. This combination means that chickpeas are slowly digested by your body, keeping you feeling full for longer.
  • Apples – Apples are a very underrated fruit. They are an excellent source of fiber, particularly a soluble type known as pectin that helps to slow down digestion and increase feelings of fullness.
  • Almonds (& Other Nuts) – Nuts are another example of a high protein plant food. This protein, combined with a decent amount of fiber, is what makes them one of the most filling foods and a particularly good snack food. [Another high-fat food that should be consumed in great moderation, unless you are trying to gain weight. – Ed.]
  • Quinoa – technically a seed but classified as a whole grain — is gluten-free, naturally rich in fiber ,and a source of complete protein (meaning it contains all essential amino acids). [FYI –  pretty much all whole foods contain complete protein. They just have different balances of amino acids. So don’t be fooled into thinking you have to eat particular foods to get enough protein. -Ed.]
  • Beans for health and longevityBeans (& Other Legumes) – [ ] Most legumes have that ideal combo of fiber and protein that promotes satiety. [ ] Other filling legumes include lentils and peas, which also rate high on the satiety scale.
  • Broccoli & Other Cruciferous Veggies – Broccoli perhaps stands out from the rest because it has a good protein content to complement the fiber. Still, you can’t go wrong with other choices like cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, or cabbage.
  • Bananas – Bananas are one of the more filling fruits with excellent fiber and water content. They contain resistant starch (the same type that’s in potatoes), which acts as a prebiotic and may further improve satiety.
  • Berries – For maximum fiber content, go for blackberries or raspberries, which both check in at about 8 grams per cup. Again, pair them with a protein, like nuts, to stretch out the feeling of fullness.
  • Chia Seeds – [ ] some research shows that chia seeds can absorb up to 15 times their weight it water, which slows their passage through your digestive tract and maintains that feeling of fullness. Just a tablespoon or two a day can help keep your appetite in check.
  • Oranges are a good source of calciumOranges – The same study that found potatoes had the top satiety score also ranked oranges high up. They actually had the same score as apples, likely due to their high fiber— and specifically pectin— content.
  • Celery – If you need even more reasons to eat celery, it contains powerful compounds like apigenin and kaempferol that have antioxidant power. Eat it with natural nut butter or guacamole to stay full for even longer.
  • Pears – Pears are a very high fiber fruit, coming in at 4-6 grams per medium fruit. The fiber is a combination of both soluble and insoluble types, including a good amount of pectin.

Raw Onions

This one is my own addition, because I’ve found that adding raw onions to just about any dish will satisfy my appetite for a lot longer than eating the dish without them. It is probably more due to the lingering flavor than to any high amount of fiber.

Stopping the breast cancer clockA Promising New Breast Cancer Treatment

I’ve known way too many women who died of breast cancer, or are fighting it now, so this study sounds really hopeful to me.

Too many women are anxiously waiting for their mammogram or biopsy results.

What if our medical system could give them all relief by stopping the clock on breast cancer! This study sure sounds like they are on the right track.

From zonia.com:

According to the study, “the combination of lapatinib and trastuzumab significantly improved pathological complete response, event-free survival, overall survival, and toxicities in the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer compared with trastuzumab or lapatinib alone.”

What’s cool about the combination of drugs is that the size and hormone receptor status of the tumors didn’t affect the outcome. Even if the tumor were larger, they were visibly affected (shrunk) by the combination of these two medications.
