Summertime! ButterflyGreetings,

I hope you enjoy summertime as much as I do. Sure makes me understand why my ancestors called the afterlife realm “the Summerland.” Who would want to end up in a winter world in the next life? Well, I actually know a few people who prefer winter, but… I just don’t get that.

Here in the Northern Hemisphere, flowers are popping, butterflies are flitting and plants are racing to reach the sky, at least until the Summer Solstice when everything starts slowing down.

Don’t forget to go outside to enjoy the exuberance of Nature!

This month we explore the connection between eating eggs and cancer risk. Turns out it’s a lot higher than I would have guessed! We’ll also take a look at the dangers of consuming erythritol (the darling of the Keto crowd), how frequent saunas can help prevent Alzheimer’s and dementia, and last but not least, the best mosquito repellent, which also happens to be one of the most natural options.

What’s New in My World

Aside from celebrating the return of warm weather and sunshine (ahhh!), I’ve been getting my summer garden planted and so far everything is thriving. Still working on getting my novel ready for beta readers — six months past my goal of publishing it by the end of last year, but who’s counting? If you like reading and reviewing new books, let me know and I’ll put you on the beta reader list.

We will be wrapping up my 6 week Faery Path program on Sunday and it has been so much fun that I’ll have to offer it again sometime soon. Meanwhile, midsummer looms with the promise of connecting with the Faery Queen Guinevere. See sneak peek below.

Sneak Peek

I haven’t actually launched this yet, but I don’t want you to miss it, so I’ve opened sign ups today for my loyal newsletter readers.

It’s the long awaited Guinevere, Faery Queen of Camelot Zoom workshop, happening on June 17th to celebrate the Midsummer Solstice.

Guinevere & Arthur Zoom workshop

Other than that, nothing immediately on the horizon, but I’ve got a few ideas percolating and you’ll be the first to know when they materialize. Let me know if there is something you would like to explore next.

eggs raise TMAO levelsEggs Increase Risk for Cancer — Even More than Processed Meats

I was just listening to Dr. Kim Williams, past President of the American College of Cardiology, talking about Ketogenic diets.

I wasn’t surprised to hear him say that “nobody should be on a Keto diet “unless your weight loss is more important than your life” (because keto diets have been shown to increase all cause mortality by 31%). Yikes!

What did surprise me was his statement that “eggs were worse than processed red meat in cancer [risk].”

I hadn’t heard that before, so I looked for some research to follow up on that statement. I couldn’t find much online. He probably found it in some obscure medical journal.

However, I did find this from Dr. Greger’s nutritionfacts.org blog:

Perhaps it’s the TMAO made from the choline in meat and eggs that’s promoting cancer growth. Indeed, in the Women’s Health Initiative study, women with the highest TMAO levels in their blood had approximately three times greater risk of rectal cancer, suggesting that TMAO levels “may serve as a potential predictor of increased colorectal cancer risk.”

Three times greater risk — that’s a big difference!

Is enjoying the taste of meat and eggs really worth tripling your chances of developing cancer? I sure don’t think so!

Dr. Greger goes on to say:

Since choline and carnitine are the primary sources of TMAO production, the logical intervention strategy might be to reduce meat, dairy, and egg consumption. And, if we eat plant-based for long enough, we can actually change our gut microbial communities such that we may not be able to make TMAO even if we try [i.e. eat meat or eggs].

That’s a whole other subject, but isn’t it amazing that you can foster a healthy gut microbiome that blocks TMAO production just by eating a whole plant foods diet?

Erythritol, blood clotting and strokeErythritol, Blood Clotting & Stroke

While we are on the subject of Keto diets, here’s some news about a sweetener that is often recommended by Keto promoters. Once touted as safe and harmless, erythritol has turned out to be quite the opposite.

From everydayhealth.com:

Erythritol, a popular sugar substitute found in Truvia and used in a variety of no-sugar and keto-friendly products, may be linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, according to a new study published today in Nature Medicine.

Researchers found that people with the highest levels of erythritol in their blood were twice as likely to have a heart attack, stroke, or death compared to people with the lowest levels.

The article goes on to say that more studies need to be done, but why take the chance? As that old TV commercial used to say, “You can’t fool Mother Nature.”

Something that tastes sweet and doesn’t have any calories is probably going to have some negative impact on your health (stevia included).

That is not to say you have to miss out on all the sweetness of life. Just find it in natural whole foods like dates, bananas and raisins, or even maple syrup, coconut sugar or honey.

Oh no! Those are CARBS!

Well, guess what — your body actually needs carbohydrates to function at its best. In fact, according to several studies I’ve read, ideally 70-80% of your calories should come from whole food carbs.

The problem these days (aside from all the refined sugars and starches, and excess protein, people eat) is that most people are combining sugars and starches with fats, or they are just eating so much fat in general that the insulin receptors of their cells cannot absorb glucose. That’s called insulin resistance and it can lead to diabetes, obesity and a number of other chronic health issues.

I read somewhere that it takes about 48 hours for fats to be cleared from a woman’s bloodstream (a little less time for men), so eating a high fat meal can compromise your ability to metabolize sugars for two days!

But I digress. To learn more about fats and insulin resistance check out Dr. Barnard’s research and Dr. McDougall for the science. They are both amazIng sources of reliable information.

Bottom line, keep your fats low and load up on whole food carbohydrates like potatoes, sweet potatoes, and fruits. Gluten free grains and beans are also good sources of whole food carbs. And definitely avoid all forms of no-calorie sweeteners, even if they claim to be “natural” and harmless.

Sauna healthSaunas Can Lower Risk of Alzheimer’s

Here’s some good news! Daily relaxation in a sauna can actually protect your brain — by a lot!

Look at this research from naturalhealth365.com:

What the researchers discovered was eye-opening: the most frequent sauna users enjoyed a dramatic 66 percent decrease in their risk of dementia and a 65 percent decrease in Alzheimer’s risk – when compared to the weekly users.

Those who used a sauna two to three times a week also lowered their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia – cutting their odds by roughly 20 percent.  But they didn’t enjoy the same robust level of protection as the most frequent sauna users.

And the benefits of frequent sauna use don’t end there.  Dr. Laukkenen noted that the heat generated by saunas seems to protect not only the memory but the heart as well.

Quality saunas aren’t cheap, but it sure sounds like they’re a worthwhile investment. The best ones I know of are Sunlighten Saunas.

Anyone want to contribute to my home sauna purchase? Wink!

Mosquito Season

Lemon Eucalyptus oil outshines most other mosquito repellents. Also works to repel fleas and ticks for up to 7 hours. Watch to see what Dr. Greger’s research shows:
