Naked ladies - harbingers of AutumnGreetings!

Happy Lughnasadh – it’s the first harvest festival of the year and beginning of Autumn in Celtic lands.

There’s been a definite shift in the weather. Days are still warm, but mornings are crisper and there’s an abundance of naked lady flowers blooming in our yard. That’s always the first sign of Autumn to me.

What’s New?

Articles for August

This month we’re stepping out of the mainstream pool a bit more than usual. What about listening to plants for healing information? Shamanic healers have been doing it for ages. You can too!

Have you tried homeopathy for flu symptoms? It has saved many lives, so it is always worth trying.

Did you know how dangerous it is to eat dairy products? Prostate cancer is just one of the many risks. And don’t expect chemotherapy to be the fix you need if you get cancer. It only works about 1% of the time. Prevention is key!

Last but not least, the Bristol Stool chart will give you the scoop on how your poop should look. Guess how to get it in the “normal” range?

Enjoy your August!

rosemary for remembranceListen to Your Herbs

Did you know that shamanic healers sometimes only work with one type of plant. They have a particular plant ally that gives them the healing information they need.

I think everyone should have a special plant ally, because it will give you a unique connection with the plant world. You can meet your plant ally by taking a shamanic journey to the lower world and asking to meet one in the same way people meet their animal allies. Here’s a YouTube video that will guide you through the process (it’s long, but interesting) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtXCw101doI.

You can also communicate directly with each type of herb to find out how it can help people.

Herbalist Kami McBride will teach you how. Here’s what she says:

If you are learning about how to use herbs to take better care of your family, you’ve got your herb books, you’re taking great herb classes and trying lots of medicine making techniques and delicious recipes.

However, there is another piece to learning herbal medicine that will take your studies to a deeper, more personalized level… And that is learning to perceive communication directly from the plants themselves.

Truly effective herbal studies is made up of half intellect and half direct relationship with the plants.

Homeopathy and Cancer healitall.comHomeopathy and Flu

When there is a bug going around, the first thing I do is stock up on antiviral herbs, Vitamin C, zinc sulfate and homeopathic remedies that fit the most common symptoms.

When it’s flu, the go-to remedy is often Oscillococcinum, but it has one drawback for strict vegans. It is made from duck liver.

Other excellent options are Gelsemium and Bryonia, both of which were used to save many lives back in the flu epidemic of 1918. In fact, homeopathic hospitals had a much higher survival rate than the ordinary allopathic hospitals.

Homeopathy-uk.org has this to say about Oscillococcinum:

Homeopathy [ ] has a lot to offer, both in the prevention and  treatment of influenza. The homeopathic remedy Oscillococcinum (also  known as Anas barb) has been used in France for many years and can be bought at nearly any chemist in France. It is not licensed for sale over  the counter in the UK but can be prescribed by a registered medical practitioner for individual patients.

The suggested treatment regime is:

    • At the start of an attack of ’flu,’ take a dose as soon as possible. Repeat two or three times at six hourly intervals.
    • For a well established attack of ’flu,’ take one morning and evening for up to three days.

You don’t have to take the whole tube at once like the label recommends. Just a few of the tiny pellets will do the same thing, because it is an energetic medicine rather than a physical one.

If taking Gelsemium or Bryonia, you only need one or two of the 30C pellets. Match your symptoms to pick the right remedy. If your symptoms are severe, contact a classical homeopath for a stronger or more pinpointed remedy.

60% Higher Rates of Prostate Cancer with Dairy

Milk and Prostate Cancer?

It’s not only prostate cancer that is higher in people who consume dairy products, but that’s what this particular study covers.

From forksoverknives.com:

In evaluating the outcomes for each subset of participants, the researchers found that the high-dairy group developed prostate cancer at a significantly higher rate. Milk consumption, in particular, was strongly correlated to risk.

Compared with men who drank just ⅓ cup of milk per week, men who drank 1¾ cups daily—a little less than two 8-ounce servings—were 25% more likely to develop prostate cancer. When compared with vegan participants, those same men were 60% more likely to develop prostate cancer. Whether the milk was full fat, reduced fat, or nonfat made no difference—the increased risk was still present.

Of course all dairy products are made from milk, so draw your own conclusions about that.

Is chemo the best choice for you?Chemo Effectiveness Questioned

Here’s a controversial subject. Hospitals and medical practitioners almost always recommend chemotherapy in cancer cases, but how effective is it, really?

Here’s what Dr. Greger discovered:

But if you look at our most common cancers—that is, of the colon, lung, breast, and prostate—the success rate [of chemo] is only about 1 percent. That means out of nearly 14,000 colon cancer patients, for example, only 146 lived out five years, thanks to chemotherapy. The chance of survival benefit of chemo is about one in a hundred, but doctors don’t tell patients that. “Any new chemotherapy drug is still promoted as a major breakthrough in the fight against cancer, only to be quietly rejected without the fanfare that accompanied its arrival.” Indeed, the “minimal impact on survival in the more common cancers conflicts with the perceptions of many patients who feel they are receiving a treatment that will significantly enhance their chances of cure… In view of the minimal impact of cytotoxic chemotherapy on 5-year survival, and the lack of any major progress over the last 20 years, it follows that the main role of cytotoxic chemotherapy is in palliation.” It can shrink tumors, relieving pain and pressure, but that doesn’t tend to translate into living any longer. “The failure of therapy, coupled with the realization that the overwhelming majority of cancer is related to environmental, particularly lifestyle factors, dictates that prevention should be our foremost aim.”

Yes, as Dr. Greger says, “prevention should be our foremost aim.” Though we are all exposed to toxins on a daily basis, we can cut our chances of developing any type of cancer by sticking to a whole plant foods diet of fruits, vegetables, gluten-free grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. (Broken record, right?)

The Poop Scoop

Poop is a taboo subject (unless you are in the 3 to 8 year-old age range when it’s a frequent source of entertainment), but also one that everyone needs to understand. So how should your poop look?

Fortunately, someone came up with a handy chart called the Bristol Stool Chart. If your poop doesn’t look like type 3, 4 or 5, you’ve got a problem.

By Cabot Health, Bristol Stool Chart - http://cdn.intechopen.com/pdfs-wm/46082.pdf, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=84257571

Type 5 is more likely the result of too much fiber than too little… like eating a lot of fresh fruit all at once, which is not a problem now and then.

Here’s something I learned from this article – women have longer colons than men, so it is even more important for women to get enough fiber in their diets. Maybe that’s why men can get away with eating more meat and animal products in general – though it’s not healthy for anyone.

Here’s what foodrevolution.org has to say about it:

Pooping is important for everyone, but male and female bodies handle poop a bit differently. Because female reproductive organs take up more space than the male equivalent, female colons must be longer to navigate around all that non-digestive real estate. Food, therefore, takes longer to go from mouth to anus in females, which may be a central reason that women suffer from gastrointestinal discomfort at higher rates than men.

As poop moves through the colon, water and other components are reabsorbed by the body. If the process takes too long, that can cause a problem as estrogen and other hormones that are supposed to be “on the way out” get reabsorbed. Lots of fiber in the colon reduces circulating estrogen levels and decreases this reabsorption concern.

The takeaway – eat plenty of high fiber foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, whole gluten-free grains, legumes and small amounts of nuts or seeds. We’ve all heard it before, and I still find it interesting that every part of the human body provides evidence that points to the same basic diet – but of course!
