Message from Bernadette Wulf

Health Nutrition Coach Bernadette WulfGreetings!

It seems that we now have five seasons here in California – Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and FIRE! Once again thousands of acres are burning as forests, homes and businesses burn. I am lucky to be outside of the evacuation zone this year (knock on wood), but we are still dealing with plenty of smoke from huge fires only ten or twenty miles away.

If you had to evacuate or have lost your home or business, I am so sorry. I wish you all the best possible outcomes. On top of the COVID quarantine and insane political climate, the world is feeling rather surreal of late!

I find myself immersed in a world of fascinating Arthurian lore and nutrition research as I try not to get sucked into the vortex of craziness that goes on outside my door. I hope you have interests that can provide you with a similar oasis of calm within the storms.

This month we have some dire warnings about the toxic effects of Tylenol and assorted chemicals found in almost every household, and some good news about whole grains and magnesium that can make a world of difference in your health. Read on for healthy tips to make your life feel a little bit more under your control – we all need that right now!

Have questions or comments? Email Bernadette Please use this link and do not hit reply to this post, because I may never get your message that way.

To your health and happiness!

Bernadette Wulf

Tylenol affects brain functionTylenol & Risky Behavior

Nobody wants to live with constant pain, but OTC (over the counter) meds can be downright dangerous, particularly acetaminophen.

Tylenol (AKA acetaminophen) can cause stomach pain, nausea, headaches, difficulty breathing and liver damage, it also affects the personality and brain function. According to this easyhealthoptions.com article Tylenol even “reduces positive and negative emotions, including hurt feelings, distress over someone else’s suffering [empathy – Ed.] and even your own joy.” Recent studies also indicate that taking Tylenol can even lead to reckless behavior leading to physical injury and/or financial loss!

For fever reduction, the article recommends ibuprofen (which has its own negative side effects). However, there is rarely a good reason to suppress a fever. Fever is actually a helpful healing process. The temperature would have to be over 107.6 F (42 C) to damage the brain. If it is over 103 degrees F for more than 72 hours for adults (or over 101 for children), or if your baby has a fever, it is important to get it checked out by a reliable doctor rather than suppressing it with OTC drugs.

The good news is that there are much better ways to relieve chronic pain – at least for most people. The article lists several anti-inflammatory supplements that can be very helpful:

  • Black cumin seed oil
  • Turmeric extract
  • Ginger extract
  • Vitamin D3
  • (I would add Acupuncture and Homeopathy to the list, especially for injuries – Ed.)

Those are all excellent treatments to try, but they won’t remove the underlying cause of chronic pain, which is usually viral. It wasn’t until I started following the Medical Medium anti-viral protocols that I saw this for myself. After decades of constant neck and shoulder pain, the pain suddenly vanished after I’d been on the MM protocols for a few weeks. Five years later the pain has not returned, though I sometimes get a twinge of it when I’m fighting off a bug – another sign that it is viral in origin.

I had always thought my neck and shoulder pain was from a childhood neck injury, Lyme’s disease, and too much time hunched in front of a computer, but even though I didn’t change anything about those I still experienced complete relief. The only thing I changed was my diet by following Medical Medium guidelines. The improvement was a very pleasant surprise and a dramatic one at that.

If you or a loved one are suffering from chronic pain, you might want to try the supplements listed above, and I would strongly encourage you to try following the Medical Medium protocols for at least six months. Many thousands of people are so glad they did – and they are sticking with it for life.

Preventing Alzeheimer'sCeliac & Chemical Exposure

I found this article very disturbing, because it highlights a human-caused problem, and a big one! When will we ever learn?

From easyhealthoptions.com:

One new study that was led by researchers from the NYU Grossman School of Medicine discovered that elevated blood levels of the toxins found in fire retardants, pesticides, and nonstick cookware all were linked to a higher risk of celiac disease in young adults and children. Published in the Environmental Research journal, the study sheds light on the serious dangers toxic chemicals pose to us and our children.

Given that the incidence of celiac and gluten intolerance has exploded over the past decade, this information should make every parent’s blood boil. They don’t even list all the glyphosate that is routinely dumped on our farmlands to kill weeds, and on grains and beans to force them to ripen prematurely. Glyphosate has been clearly implicated in gluten intolerance as well as cancer, yet almost everyone tested has detectable levels of it in their bloodstream.

Unfortunately, this is particularly problematic for women and girls. Females are more likely to have celiac and “higher-than-normal exposure to pesticides result[s] in them being eight times more likely to develop gluten intolerance.”

PFAs from nonstick cookware can cause five to nine times higher incidence of celiac in young females than in males. Young males seem to be more affected by fire retardant chemicals leading to twice as many cases of celiac disease.

Please pass this information to all parents you know. Avoiding non-stick cookware (except clean ceramic coatings) and agricultural chemicals (eat organic) will go a long way to preventing a lifetime of hardship for millions of children. Of course other chemicals like fire retardants, synthetic fragrances, household cleaners and pesticides can also be part of the problem.

The chemical companies have no interest in lowering their profits by taking these toxic products off the market. It is up to us to put them out of business or force them to clean up their act by refusing to buy their products. Think before you buy!

Protect your blood sugar levelsMagnesium & Blood Sugar

If you have blood sugar issues (as well as a whole list of other complaints) you may be deficient in magnesium. Unfortunately, there is no good medical test to tell whether you have an adequate magnesium level in your body, so you have to be a bit of a detective to know that your level is low.

Here are a few other signs that you may be magnesium deficient:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Heart attacks
  • Migraines
  • Muscle cramps
  • PMS
  • High blood pressure
  • Hormone problems
  • Brain fog
  • Sleep issues
  • Low energy
  • Low vitamin D
  • Low vitamin K

According to thenutritionwatchdog.com:

Magnesium helps manage insulin levels in the body and can prevent blood sugar spikes and crashes from occurring. It also plays a large role in blood pressure control, preventing high blood pressure from occurring, especially when combined with enough potassium in the diet. This does two things: controls stress that can elevate insulin levels and improves overall blood pressure that, when out of control, increases insulin resistance and can cause type 2 diabetes to occur more easily.

Excess calcium can make matters even worse, since calcium can block magnesium absorption. Of course, you probably know by now that taking calcium supplements can also lead to hardening of the arteries and heart attacks (possibly due to blocking magnesium). Calcium, magnesium and phosphorus need to be kept in balance, but most people who eat animal products get far too much calcium and phosphorus and too little magnesium.

The best sources of magnesium are leafy green vegetables, whole grains, beans and nuts, but if you are like me you will probably need to also take a magnesium supplement. In addition to excess calcium and/or phosphorus, stress and viruses can eat up your magnesium supply even if you are including adequate amounts in your diet.

I like Calm brand unflavored magnesium – NOT the one with added calcium or the questionably flavored ones. And never take a calcium supplement unless it is derived from whole foods. Otherwise you may be setting yourself up for a heart attack! If you really think you need more calcium, try eating collard greens. They are packed with it!

Whole gluten free grains for eye healthWhy Eat Whole Grains?

No thanks to the recent Keto & Paleo diet fads, grains have been vilified as bad guys lately. However, whole grains, along with vegetables, fruits and legumes, have been the foundation of a healthy human diet for thousands of years. In fact, eating whole grains can improve blood sugar levels and help prevent type 2 diabetes.

Whole grains can also help prevent heart attacks just as well as a popular prescription drug when eaten as part of a healthy low fat diet. Grains sound like a lot tastier option – and cheaper!

From easyhealthoptions.com

Whole grains [ ] raised the levels of 5-aminovaleric acid betaine, or 5-AVAB, which is shown to be heart-protective. The researchers discovered that eating whole grains causes 5-AVAB to build up in your heart tissue which helps to shift your cardiac metabolism, delivering that protective effect for your heart.

In fact, the research team says that 5-AVAB works similar to a prescription drug used to treat heart disease at a cellular level.

If you’ve been scared off “carbs” by all the media hype about “good fats” and protein, please turn off the media and tune in to real scientific health experts like Dr. Greger, Dr. Barnard, Dr. McDougall… and the Medical Medium if you are open to less scientific channeled input (bottom line, his information brings excellent results for most people who follow his advice).

Complex carbohydrates are the foundation of a healthy diet, whether they come from fruits, starchy vegetables or whole grains and they should make up at least 75% of your daily calories.
